A greenhouse gas is extremely critical to maintain a suitable temperature for life on earth. Without greenhouse gases the average temperature of the earth would be -20°C.

A greenhouse gas is defined as a gas which absorbs and emits radiant energy within the thermal infrared range. The resulting effect is known as the greenhouse effect. The primary greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone.
