In December 1979, the Soviet Union sent a large number of troops into Afghanistan. The Soviet Union assumed complete military and political control of Kabul along with other vast regions of the country. For more than a decade since then Moscow continued to subdue the Afghan civil war and maintain a socialist government on its border. It was a watershed event of the Cold War.
